YouTube introduces a new scrolling experience through 'Charts' feature

In a significant change, YouTube is discontinuing its traditional Trending page and Trending Now list, and replacing them with category-specific charts such as Trending Music Videos, Weekly Top Podcast Shows, and Trending Movie Trailers, with plans to add more categories over time.

This change reflects a shift in user behavior: trends now emerge as many videos across diverse communities rather than a single viral video, leading to multiple micro-trends that are better represented in focused charts. Moreover, users increasingly discover trends through personalized recommendations, search suggestions, Shorts, comments, and Communities rather than a centralized Trending page.

The introduction of YouTube Charts allows users to explore the most popular content within specific genres, offering more precise and topical engagement than the previous all-encompassing Trending list.

Regarding content discovery and creator promotion, YouTube is emphasizing personalized recommendations as the main avenue for viewers to find videos they’ll enjoy, making discovery feel more natural and relevant. The Explore tab, subscription feeds, and creator channels remain important for browsing non-personalized content.

To support creators, YouTube has introduced new tools: - An Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio provides AI-driven content suggestions to help creators identify emerging ideas within their niches. - A Hype Promotional System allows fans to boost selected videos, enabling under-the-radar creators to gain visibility and potentially climb the discovery charts.

These changes aim to create a more dynamic and personalized discovery ecosystem that can better accommodate the complexity of current trends and help creators adapt to evolving viewer preferences.

Here's a summary of the changes:

| Aspect | Previous System | New System & Effects | |----------------------|------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------------------------| | Trending display | Single Trending page with viral videos list | Multiple category-specific charts (Music, Podcasts, Trailers, etc.) | | Trend nature | Broad viral trends | Micro-trends across diverse fandoms and communities | | Content discovery | Centralized Trending tab | Personalized recommendations, Explore tab, and charts | | Creator promotion | Less targeted | AI-driven Inspiration Tab and fan-driven Hype system |

This represents a strategic shift by YouTube from a broad viral snapshot to a more nuanced, personalized content discovery model that better fits modern audience behavior and supports creators in a competitive environment.

The updates are expected to take effect in the coming weeks, with users able to explore charts for Trending Music Videos, Weekly Top Podcast Shows, and Trending Movie Trailers, among other content categories. Users will see their personalized recommendations alongside non-personalized general content in the traditional Explore menu or through their subscription feed.

The Hype feature aims to let viewers "amplify fresh videos they love," while the Inspiration tab in YouTube Studio is intended to help creators spot the "next big thing" for their channel. Artists on the rise will have a dedicated spot on the "Music Explore page."

The change was announced by the YouTube team in a community page post, with the updates expected to continue being invested in over time to improve the Charts feature. There will be a Gaming Explore page for trending gaming videos as well.
