Witness a groundbreaking demonstration: Tesla's autonomous Model Y executes a globe-defying driving feat first

In a groundbreaking achievement, Tesla, the electric vehicle pioneer, has successfully completed the world's first fully autonomous vehicle delivery on June 28, 2025. The journey, which took place in Austin, Texas, saw a Tesla Model Y navigating through parking lots, highways, and city streets without any human intervention.

The vehicle utilized Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, specifically software version 13.2.9, relying solely on its AI-based, camera-only sensor system. The route, which included complex real-world challenges such as traffic lights, pedestrians, parking maneuvers, highway merges, and city traffic, was handled autonomously by the vehicle.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, expressed his delight over the achievement, confirming on social media that the delivery was "fully autonomous" with no humans inside or remote operators controlling the car at any time. This event represents a significant advancement beyond Tesla’s earlier “Smart Summon” features, marking a pivotal shift toward true self-driving capability on public roads.

The technology used is the same as that powering Tesla’s emerging robotaxi service in Austin, underscoring the maturity of Tesla’s autonomous driving software and AI hardware. The journey, from Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory to a residential address, was performed by a Model Y on Friday.

This historic breakthrough in the autonomous vehicle industry is a major step forward in autonomous electric vehicle delivery. Autonomous self-delivery has the potential to streamline the car delivery process, reduce costs, and eliminate trips.

However, it's important to note that Tesla’s robotaxis are being monitored remotely by Tesla staff and have a human safety monitor in the front passenger seat who can intervene at any time. This is in response to recent reports of Tesla’s Model Y robotaxis appearing to violate road rules during passenger transportation.

Alphabet-owned Waymo has been operating fully driverless vehicles on public highways for over a year, so Tesla's achievement is not the first in the autonomous vehicle industry. Nevertheless, the first autonomous vehicle delivery is seen as a win for Tesla, providing positive coverage amidst criticism of its recently launched robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.

Tesla has expressed interest in delivering more cars in this manner, but immediate plans for such a system are unclear. The company posted a video of the self-driven journey on their platform, offering a glimpse into the future of autonomous vehicle deliveries.
