Wallenius Wilhelmsen Leads Maritime Industry's Push to Net Zero Emissions by 2027

Wallenius Wilhelmsen has made significant strides in reducing emissions, with the Torrens car carrier becoming the first vessel to bunker B30 HSFO-Biofuel in Korea last year. The company, which has been exploring emission-cutting technology, is set to achieve net zero emissions by 2027 with its new carmax vessels.

The automotive industry is actively working towards rebuilding ocean-going car capacity while minimizing transport emissions. Volkswagen Group has been utilizing LNG-powered vessels for cross-Atlantic deliveries, while Hyundai Glovis has invested $1.89 billion in 12 dual-fuel car carrier vessels that can run on LNG. Meanwhile, Ford Europe has been chartering its own vessels due to a shortage of vessel capacity since the Covid pandemic.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen's commitment to sustainability is evident in its recent projects. The company's new car carriers, including the 9,300 CEU methanol dual-fuel vessels that can run on alternative fuel sources and will be ammonia-ready, are vital for accelerating towards net zero emissions, as stated by Xavier Leroi, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of shipping services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen. The company's Orcelle sail-propelled car carrier project, which received €9m ($9.7m) in funding from the EU's Horizon research fund in 2023, further demonstrates its dedication to sustainable shipping. This project involves Wallenius Wilhelmsen and aims to harness the power of wind for propulsion, reducing emissions even further.

The maritime industry's shift towards sustainability is gaining momentum, with companies such as Maersk, Wärtsilä, MAN Energy Solutions, and Hyundai Heavy Industries investing in the development of ship propulsion systems using alternative fuel sources. Wallenius Wilhelmsen's innovative projects and commitment to reducing emissions set a strong precedent for the industry, with its new car carriers poised to play a key role in achieving net zero emissions by 2027.
