Voice-Enabled AI Assistant Integrated with IDA in Volkswagen Vehicles
Volkswagen of America, Inc. is set to launch a ChatGPT-integrated voice assistant named Plus Speech in the United States, starting September 6, 2024. This AI-powered generative voice assistant aims to revolutionize the driving experience by offering advanced voice control of vehicle functions and seamless interaction through natural language.
Features of Plus Speech
The Plus Speech voice assistant is powered by Cerence Chat Pro and boasts AI-enhanced natural language understanding, enabling it to handle complex, conversational questions beyond standard automotive functions. It can suggest restaurants, road trip destinations, or even create stories to entertain those in the car.
One of the standout features is its ability to detect when a driver is feeling cold and automatically activate the heating system upon saying "I'm chilly". This hands-free functionality is designed to ensure maximum comfort and safety while driving.
For added convenience, all session contextual data is deleted immediately to ensure maximum data protection, and the voice assistant does not access vehicle data.
Compatible Models
The Plus Speech voice assistant will be available in various Volkswagen models, including the ID.4 and ID. Buzz electric vehicles, starting from 2025. The feature is also reported on recent Volkswagen models such as the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan.
Vehicles supporting Volkswagen’s myVW connected services platform, including newer models like the ID.4 electric SUV and the 2026 Atlas, will also have access to this innovative feature.
Availability and Subscription
Starting next week, ChatGPT functionality will be automatically activated for current owners of compatible MY24 ID.4 vehicles with an active Plus Speech subscription. For other eligible vehicles, the Plus Speech with AI subscription will become available through the myVW mobile app, typically offering a one-year free trial for new users.
Monthly subscriptions for models equipped with compatible infotainment will be accessible via the myVW app, with activation managed digitally. It's worth noting that features like Plus Speech may require a subscription renewal post-trial to maintain access, as seen in practice for the VW ID.4 subscriptions.
