Vodafone GmbH Activates Fiber-Optic Network in Breitnau, Ending Broadband White Spots

Vodafone, a leading German communications company, has officially activated the fiber-optic network in the municipality of Breitnau, marking the end of broadband white spots in the area. This development is the result of a collaborative effort between Vodafone and the Breitband Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald association.

First Customers Surf on Germany's Fastest Network

Following the completion of civil engineering work and the laying of fiber-optic cable, Vodafone has begun connecting the ordered fiber-optic connections. This move makes Breitnau the first municipality in the association to benefit from the future-proof broadband network built by the association. As of now, around 200 customers in Breitnau are surfing via the network.

Cooperation and Digitization of the Region

Landrat Dr. Christian Ante, the Verbandsvorsitzender, praised the cooperative efforts that led to this significant milestone. He emphasized the necessity of gigabit-speed infrastructures for the digitization of the region. The association, working in a voluntary communal effort, has created a fiber-optic infrastructure that covers the entire area of Breitnau, from the town center to sparsely populated outer areas.

Investment and Infrastructure

Around 20 million euros were invested by the association to lay the fiber-optic cable over a length of around 80 km (local network and backbone) and build three POP buildings. These structures serve as the backbone for Vodafone's active network.

About Vodafone Germany

Vodafone Germany is one of the country's leading communications companies, offering internet, mobile, fixed-line, and TV services. With over 30 million mobile, over 10 million broadband, and around 12 million TV customers, Vodafone Germany generates an annual turnover of approximately 13 billion euros with around 15,000 employees.

The company is driving the expansion of infrastructure in Germany, reaching two-thirds of all German households with gigabit speed in its nationwide cable-fiber network. Vodafone is committed to sustainability, aiming to be carbon neutral by 2025 and net-zero emissions by 2040. The company's electricity needs are already covered 100% by renewable energy today.

Service and Installation

To set up all glass fiber connections ordered by customers with a Vodafone product by the end of the year, Vodafone will coordinate a personal installation appointment with each customer in the coming weeks. During this appointment, necessary cabling will be installed in the house from the house handover point (HHP) to the desired router location, and the connection will be activated.

Customers who are still bound by an existing internet contract will be contacted at a later date once their contract can be activated.

Pioneering High-Speed Surfing Experience: The personal installation appointments scheduled by Vodafone will ensure that the first customers in Breitnau, having ordered fiber-optic connections with Vodafone products, can start experiencing the fastest network in Germany.

Digital Revolution Designed for Broad Coverage: The fiber-optic infrastructure built by the Breitband Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald association, a cooperative effort with Vodafone, provides gigabit-speed connectivity not only in densely populated areas but also in remote regions of Breitnau, promoting digital transformation.
