Vigil Concludes: A Single Individual's 57-Day Wait for Nintendo Switch 2 Results in "Joyful Tears"
A Tale of Nintendo Fervor: The Midtown Vigil
For a whopping two whole months, an enthusiastic crowd of Nintendo zealots claimed a slice of Midtown Manhattan pavement, eager to grab the Nintendo Switch 2 as soon as it hit the shelves.
Leading the charge was Rinaldy Gomez, a 33-year-old New Yorker whose dedication didn't stop at just bagging a new console. nerve-wracked about the Switch 2's unveiling back in April, Mr. Gomez planted his tent on April 9, a week after the Switch 2's grand reveal during Nintendo Direct.
June came, and Nintendo dropped the Switch 2 for sale. It streaked past records to become the fastest-selling console in Nintendo history. A staggering 3.5 million units were sold worldwide just four days after its June 5 release.
As the clock ticked closer to retail availability, Gomez opened up to our outlet outside the Nintendo Store at Rockefeller Center. With a peculiar mix of emotions, he shared the excitement he felt, but also the pending end of his extraordinary camping adventure, as it was his birthday to boot.
Nostalgia played a significant role in propelling Gomez onto the concrete. You see, Nintendo had been an integral aspect of his identity since he rememberably spent a restless night in 2012, outside the same store, eager to snag a Nintendo Wii U.
Fallout from his Nintendo passion in the ensuing years left him with an empty void that years of sobriety couldn't fill. Eventually, he came to terms with his passion and embraced it, learning to live with it rather than fight it.
Camping out for a video game isn't for the faint-hearted. For Gomez, the camaraderie was not to be underestimated. Around 20-25 people eventually settled onto the sidewalk with makeshift tents aptly dubbed "weather pods." Numbers fluctuated, but with perseverance, they managed to maintain their ranks throughout the 57-day vigil.
The urban noise and challenges of urban life, however, were no match for the camaraderie and tranquility found within tent city. Sharing a common objective helped bridge the gaps of political, social, and geographical differences that spanned their diverse group of fellow enthusiasts, from the United States to the United Kingdom.
The big day finally arrived, and the sidewalk magic unfolded as 48th Street transformed into a raucous spectacle. City dwellers craned their necks, tourists gawked, and Tesla drivers paused to snap pictures amid the sea of Nintendo fans. Gomez himself was dressed as Luigi, while others wouldn't hesitate to be spotted as Mario.
Midnight approached, and with it the end of an era. Gomez eventually returned home, exhausted yet content. Embracing routine once more was bittersweet, but it was time to move on. It was time to "touch grass," as Gomez put it, taking leisurely strolls by the Hudson River.
If given a chance to re-live those days, Gomez admits he'd take it all over again. Though the era of frequent console releases might have passed, Mr. Gomez vows to remain a beacon of Nintendo fanaticism on 48th Street, always ready to lend a helping hand to fellow enthusiasts.
