As today's CIOs know all too well, technological obligations won't vanish on their own, and the $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion of tech debt carried by Forbes Global 2000 companies is a stark reminder of this fact. However, a new report from HFS Research and Publicis Sapient suggests that the implementation of AI holds the key to overcoming tech debt and propelling enterprises into the modern era.
AI, they argue, acts like a powerful jackhammer, breaking through tech debt barriers, paving the way for complete modernization. Staggeringly, 80% of surveyed leaders across industries believe that AI has the potential to achieve this feat.
Phil Fersht, CEO and Chief Analyst at HFS Research, emphasized the urgent need for change, stating, "Enterprises must cease tinkering with outdated models and focus on shattering the barriers impeding their progress. This is the time to rewrite the rules of modernization, and those who hesitate risk being left behind in the dust."
Quite alarmingly, only 30% of enterprises feel they have fully modernized their IT applications, comparable to the percentage describing their systems as burdened by legacy infrastructure (25%) or at risk of becoming obsolescent (4%). The study indicates that an overwhelming majority (approx. half) of companies are turning to AI due to the inadequacy of existing IT services in managing these outdated systems.
Interestingly, the widespread assumption that AI is already increasingly commonplace within businesses may be unfounded. Just 22% of companies are currently actively scaling AI across multiple IT functions, while 33% are experimenting with AI in isolated areas, and 27% are exploring AI implementation but have yet to take action.

The study offers several suggestions for a successful AI transition:
- Eliminate Data Silos: AI's potential is maximized when data from disparate sources is connected in a unified infrastructure, accessible by all departments.
- Integrate Governance: Build governance mechanisms like automated controls and real-time monitoring into the foundation of the system, abandoning conventional steering committees and policy hierarchies.
- AI Stewardship: Make AI stewardship an integral component of every employee's job responsibility, enabling them to collaborate on AI-powered tasks and decision-making, thus streamlining processes and increasing overall effectiveness.
- Protecting Data: Data protection is no longer solely the CIO's responsibility; CFOs are also crucial in this aspect, particularly with respect to the data's financial applications, as breaches can lead to substantial costs.
As businesses navigate this technological landscape, fostering collaboration between CIOs and CFOs will be essential in safeguarding data and ensuring the efficient application of AI technologies. Stay tuned for our conversation with Abhesh Kumar, Chief Technology Officer at Springline Advisory, as we delve deeper into the importance of this partnership.
