Upcoming iPhone 17 Series to Incorporate GPT-5 Model for Expected Siri Upgrades

In an exciting development, Apple has announced that its virtual assistant, Siri, will be significantly enhanced with the integration of OpenAI's advanced AI model, GPT-5. This upgrade will be unveiled alongside the release of iOS 26 and the iPhone 17 series in September 2025.

The integration of GPT-5 is expected to make Siri smarter and more capable, improving its ability to understand complex queries, perform advanced reasoning, handle coding and math tasks, and interact more naturally by voice. With GPT-5's support for advanced video perception and multimodal inputs, Siri will also be able to process images, video, and live translation in apps like FaceTime and Messages.

Apple has emphasised its commitment to user privacy, ensuring that IP addresses are obscured and that OpenAI does not store identifiable user data unless explicitly linked to a ChatGPT account. Users will also have the option to invoke ChatGPT selectively for web searches, document queries, image style generation, and other tasks, either automatically when Siri defers or manually by prefacing requests with “Ask ChatGPT.”

The iPhone 17 series, which includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, will also benefit from GPT-5's integration. However, the new AI model is seen as a temporary solution for Apple's AI offerings, with multiple GPT-5 variants (mini, nano, Pro) available, some advanced capabilities behind subscription tiers, expanding access for different user needs.

The partnership between Apple and OpenAI signals Apple's willingness to lean on third-party innovation to shore up its AI deficit. This integration has brought the high stakes of integrating AI in consumer tech platforms into the forefront, with Elon Musk threatening Apple with a lawsuit, claiming antitrust violations against ChatGPT and the blocking of his AI firm xAI's Grok chatbot from prominent app rankings.

Apple has also introduced a new feature, 'Safe Completions,' to help keep users safe and protect their privacy. The company has yet to disclose further details about this feature.

The release of the iPhone 17 series and the integration of GPT-5 are scheduled for September 2025, along with the launch of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. The new-generation iPhone 17 suite is predicted to have an enormous price increase of $50-$100 per model.

This integration is set to make Siri on iPhone 17 and the fall 2025 Apple OS releases visibly more intelligent, versatile, and multimedia-aware, marking a substantial upgrade over prior models powered by GPT-4. GPT-5's multi-modal understanding, superior code assist, and coherent context handling are expected to improve Siri's performance, making it a more powerful and flexible assistant for Apple users.

Siri, powered by the integration of GPT-5, will showcase enhanced artificial-intelligence capabilities, capable of understanding complex queries, performing advanced reasoning, and handling coding and math tasks. Additionally, with GPT-5's support for advanced video perception and multimodal inputs, Siri will be able to process images, video, and even live translation in apps like FaceTime and Messages.
