Apple Unveils the Rugged Apple Watch Ultra for Endurance, Exploration, and Adventure

Apple Inc., the American technology company known for its innovative product line, has announced the latest addition to its Apple Watch family: the Apple Watch Ultra. This new model, priced at $799 (US), is designed for those seeking endurance, exploration, and adventure.

The Apple Watch Ultra is available for order today, with availability beginning on September 23. For Apple Watch Series 4 and later, watchOS 9 will be available on September 12.

One of the key features of watchOS 9 is the enhanced Compass app, offering more in-depth information and three distinct views. These include a hybrid view, an orienteering view, and a view showing latitude, longitude, elevation, and incline. The Wayfinder watch face, designed specifically for the Apple Watch Ultra, includes a compass built into the dial.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Apple Watch Ultra is ideal for a variety of activities. Three new bands - Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band - are available, each designed for different outdoor activities. The Apple Watch Ultra is designed for water sports, including extreme activities like kitesurfing and wakeboarding, as well as recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with the new Oceanic+ app.

The Oceanic+ app, in partnership with Huish Outdoors, turns the Apple Watch Ultra into a capable dive computer. It offers features like dive planning, easy-to-read dive metrics, visual and haptic alerts, no-decompression limit, ascent rate, and safety stop guidance. The Depth app displays time, current depth, water temperature, duration under water, and max depth reached.

For emergencies, the Apple Watch Ultra features an 86-decibel siren. This siren can help draw attention to a location should users become lost or injured. The siren's first pattern suggests distress, while the second mimics the universally recognized SOS pattern.

To cater to multi-day backpacking trips, battery life can be extended to reach up to 60 hours using Low Power Mode plus an additional low-power setting that reduces the frequency of GPS and heart rate readings.

The Apple Watch Ultra also boasts the best battery life of any Apple watch, reaching up to 36 hours during normal use and up to 60 hours with a low-power setting. Three months of Apple Fitness+ are included for customers who purchase the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 8, or Apple Watch SE, or new purchases of Apple Watch Series 4 or later.

Finally, the Apple Watch Ultra features a 49mm titanium case and a flat sapphire front crystal, making it the biggest and brightest Apple Watch display yet. The customizable Action button provides instant access to various features, and pressing it drops a Compass Waypoint that can be edited. The Compass Waypoint complication updates dynamically in real time with both the direction of the waypoint and the approximate distance.

The Apple Watch Ultra is a robust and versatile tool for those seeking adventure and endurance, offering a range of features tailored to outdoor activities and emergency situations.
