Unveiling Enhanced Quad-Powered Models: Rivian's Gen 2 R1T and R1S Boast Increased Power, Distance, and Off-Road Performance, Yet Carry a Steep Cost
American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Rivian has announced its second-generation Quad-Motor powertrain for its R1T pickup and R1S SUV models, promising a significant leap in power, range, and technology.
The in-house developed Quad-Motor powertrain now powers all four electric motors, providing enhanced performance and efficiency. The new system delivers a massive 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 pound-feet of torque, enabling near-supercar acceleration for a full-size SUV or pickup.
The standard battery pack for the 2026 R1 vehicles is a large 140 kWh usable capacity, supporting longer range and rapid charging. Moreover, the vehicles will come equipped with a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, offering access to Tesla's Supercharger network without the need for adapters.
Rivian has also introduced new software features and driving modes exclusive to the Quad, including "Launch Cam" and "RAD Tuner". The "Launch Cam" captures high-definition footage of the vehicle's acceleration, while "RAD Tuner" allows drivers to adjust the vehicle's performance characteristics to their liking.
The Quad-Motor R1T starts at $117,885 (including destination), and the R1S starts at $123,885. The Launch Editions command an additional $4,000 premium.
Off-road capabilities remain a strength for the R1 vehicles, with configurable tire and suspension options available. The vehicles can also be equipped with a new interior design called "Ascend", featuring quilted seats, extended stitching, and luxurious cut-and-sew material. Buyers can choose from three nature-inspired color palettes.
Rivian will include a complimentary CCS adapter, ensuring compatibility with most DC fast-charging stations. The Launch Edition of the R1S and R1T will return, featuring unique features such as special paint colors, a unique dashboard badge, and bundled extras.
Exterior updates include Laguna Beach Blue accents, Quad-specific badging, and new wheel options. The 0-60 mph acceleration time with Launch Mode is 2.5 seconds, and the quarter-mile time is 10.5 seconds.
In addition, Rivian is introducing a new maneuver called "Kick Turn", which allows for tighter turns with a simple button press, adjusting power to the inside wheels. This feature is set to be released in September.
Rivian also offers a referral link for those buying a Tesla, providing three months of Full Self-Driving (FSD). The new Quad-Motor system also features a system that smartly slows down or even reverses the inside wheels for precise control over wheel slip.
With these updates, the 2026 Rivian R1 Quad-Motor vehicles are positioned as top-tier contenders among high-performance electric SUVs and trucks, rivaling models like the GMC Hummer EV.
The Quad-Motor powertrain, now standard on the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, promises a lifestyle shift in electric-vehicle technology, offering near-supercar acceleration and access to rapid charging stations through the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. The new system's charging capabilities and high-performance features position Rivian's 2026 R1 Quad-Motor vehicles as top-tier competitors in the electric-cars market, challenging models like the GMC Hummer EV.
