UK Van Drivers Prefer Electric, Driving Fleet Transition
A significant shift is underway in the UK's van industry, with a majority of drivers expressing a preference for electric vans. This signals a turning point in fleet electrification, as businesses look to cut costs, meet environmental commitments, and stay ahead of competitors.
A staggering 70% of van fleet drivers now prefer electric vans over petrol or diesel vehicles. This preference is driven by several factors, including cost savings, stricter environmental policies, and the improving quality of electric vehicles. The trend is accelerating, with over 50% of van drivers planning to switch to EVs by 2025.
Businesses are advised to prepare for depot charging infrastructure early in their transition. This is crucial as legal requirements for charging infrastructure in buildings become stricter from 2025, impacting operational feasibility and costs for electric vehicle fleets. Additionally, companies interested in electric truck leasing contracts are currently in a critical phase. The toll exemption for electric trucks ends on December 31, 2025, and afterward, toll fees will be lower for electric trucks due to CO2-based tolling. This makes fleet planning and investment decisions time-sensitive.
A mix of electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vans may suit businesses transitioning gradually to electric vehicles. This allows businesses to balance their needs with the current range limitations and charging infrastructure gaps. However, businesses adopting EVs now often save money over their lifecycle, getting ahead of competitors.
The preference for electric vans among UK van drivers is clear, with 7 in 10 drivers favouring them over petrol or diesel. This trend is set to continue, with more businesses adopting EVs to meet environmental commitments and save costs. However, businesses must plan ahead for charging infrastructure and consider the upcoming changes in toll exemptions and legal requirements.
