TU Graz Leads 'HOT' Project: Modular Wooden Constructions Expand Gründerzeit Buildings

A consortium led by TU Graz has developed innovative methods to expand existing Gründerzeit buildings using modular wooden constructions. The 'HOT - Holz-on-Top' project aims to densify these historic buildings without compromising their original character.

The team developed a modular building technology concept and a building physics guide catalog for expansion. A key innovation is the folding truss roof structure, a triangular plywood truss that allows for additional floors without altering the existing roof shape. The concept enables the addition of up to two extra floors to non-preservable roof structures.

Researchers found that 80% of the 45 roof structures surveyed in Graz require maintenance within five years. The 'Holz-on-Top' project, funded by the Waldfonds and carried out within the Think.Wood program, identified the potential for an additional 35,000 people in Graz and 54,000 in Vienna through inner-city expansion. The project's concept is applicable to 85% of known roof pitches in Gründerzeit buildings. It also provides for sustainable heating solutions like air-water heat pumps.

The 'Holz-on-Top' project offers a sustainable and efficient way to expand Gründerzeit buildings, addressing maintenance needs and increasing housing capacity in Graz and Vienna. The modular wooden constructions and innovative roof structures preserve the buildings' original character while promoting sustainable urban development.
