Trail Running Enters a New Phase with Seek by Keen: Insights into the Outdoor Brand's Initial Venture into Rapid Expeditions

The outdoor footwear industry is about to see a new addition, as Keen, a 22-year-old company known for its hiking boots, shoes, and sandals, is set to launch its first trail running shoe: the Keen Seek.

Scheduled for release in the UK in September, the Keen Seek is purpose-built for faster adventures, offering ultra-durability, energetic cushioning, and a roomy toe box designed for comfort on rugged terrain.

At its core, the Keen Seek boasts 4mm high-abrasion rubber lugs rated to last up to 925 miles, delivering strong traction and durability. The cushioning is powered by QuantumFoamX, Keen’s newest, energetic foam, providing longer-lasting comfort and fluid runs.

The shoe follows Keen’s iconic fit, offering generous space across the forefoot to allow natural toe splay for better stability and comfort on uneven surfaces. Key specifications include a 6mm heel-to-toe drop, a heel height of 1.54 inches (39 mm), and a shaft height ranging from 9.84 to 12.99 cm depending on the gender and model.

Additional features include a lace garage to tuck laces securely, sustainable materials such as post-consumer recycled webbing and agricultural waste in the outsole, and a PFAS-free construction, reflecting Keen’s commitment to reducing harmful chemicals during manufacture.

The Keen Seek is available in men’s and women’s sizing and multiple colorways, with the men's model featuring 38.5mm of foam under the heel, while the women's version has 36mm. The shoe's weight varies between the two versions, with the men's version weighing approximately 10.79 to 10.9 oz (306 to 309 g), and the women's version weighing about 8.61 to 8.75 oz (244 to 248 g).

The development of the Keen Seek took approximately two years, with the team at Keen working closely with a group of testers around the US to fine-tune the geometry and design of the shoe through multiple prototypes. One of the lead developers at Keen ran 900 miles, testing various prototypes during the development process.

Will Schuh, director of product management at KEEN, stated that the company wondered why they couldn't make something for faster adventures, given their proven fit, comfort, durability, and protection. The Keen Seek is priced at a reasonable $185, in line with Keen's announcement that it would not raise prices to cover tariffs.

The Keen Seek is designed for well-packed and gravel trails, offering a modest 6mm drop and a durable QuantumFoam midsole for a responsive, comfortable, and stable ride. The shoe also features a pre-molded TPU heel counter and lockdown-knit fit for secure foot hold.

The development team conducted in-depth interviews with runners to learn about their preferences for trail running shoes, ensuring the Keen Seek meets the needs of those seeking a comfortable, durable, and eco-conscious shoe for their trail running adventures.

Technology plays a significant role in the Keen Seek, as QuantumFoamX, Keen's newest foam technology, powers the shoe's cushioning, providing longer-lasting comfort and fluid runs. Furthermore, the Keen Seek incorporates innovative features like a lace garage, sustainable materials, and a PFAS-free construction, showcasing the company's dedication to combining performance with environmental conscientiousness.
