The world of rally racing is set to witness a groundbreaking moment as the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 H2 Concept, a hydrogen-powered rally car, makes its competition debut at Rally Finland from July 31 to August 3, 2025. This innovative vehicle combines Toyota's traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) technology with liquid hydrogen fuel to deliver near-zero emissions without compromising the authentic ICE sound and feel that rally fans love.

The GR Yaris Rally2 H2 Concept is based on the successful GR Yaris Rally2 chassis, featuring a wide bodykit and aerodynamic enhancements similar to its gasoline-powered counterpart. Toyota's foray into hydrogen combustion technology for motorsport began in 2021, with the participation of hydrogen-powered Corollas in Japan's Super Taikyu series. The technology was later showcased on European rally stages in 2022, with an experimental GR Yaris H2 car driven by Toyota's President Akio Toyoda and rally legend Juha Kankkunen at the Ypres Rally.

The 2025 Rally Finland version was developed and tested by Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team at their base in Jyväskylä, Finland, including trials on gravel and tarmac stages. Kankkunen, a four-time World Rally Champion, will be behind the wheel of the H2 Concept during the event.

Technical details reveal that the car uses a modified turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine adapted to run on liquid hydrogen fuel, emitting almost no tailpipe emissions. Hydrogen fuel is stored in high-pressure tanks, enabling a driving experience nearly identical to gasoline-powered cars but with about 90% lower CO2 emissions. Power output is around 300 hp, matching the gasoline-powered GR Yaris Rally2, ensuring competitive performance. Fueling with liquid hydrogen takes about 5 minutes, compared to about 2 minutes for conventional gasoline refills. The driving range is around 200 km, somewhat lower than the gasoline variant's 300 km, due to hydrogen's lower energy density.

Toyota sees hydrogen combustion engines as a promising path towards carbon-neutral motorsport, blending environmental responsibility with the excitement and tradition of rally racing. This hydrogen Rally2 car is a key step to demonstrating that hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines can compete at a high level while significantly reducing environmental impact. However, challenges remain, particularly limited hydrogen refueling infrastructure at race venues, higher costs, and reduced range. Toyota views this technology as a possible future for motorsports where fans can enjoy performance with diminished environmental guilt.

In summary, the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 H2 Concept represents an innovative hydrogen-powered rally car built for Rally2 competition, making its debut at Rally Finland in 2025. It combines near-zero emissions with traditional ICE performance and sound, reflecting Toyota’s commitment to a carbon-neutral motorsport future.
