The Schwerin State Chancellery has announced that the Ikareum project will not only house a modern tourist information centre but also serve as the entrance area for the upcoming aviation museum. The new tourist information centre, which has received an increased funding of 7.4 million euros from the state, is located next to the Nikolaikirche. The Nikolaikirche will host a permanent exhibition, for which the state will co-finance. The total cost of the new tourist information centre, including the renovation of the Nikolaikirche, is 8.9 million euros. The new building will include ticket booths, cloakroom, toilets, and a museum shop.
The city is seeking an alternative for the current building of the Regional Information and Tourist Centre due to its dilapidated state. The new centre will initially serve as a tourist information centre, but later house the entrance area of the Ikareum.
