Top executive announces departure from post as Citizens CEO

Beth Johnson, a prominent figure in the financial sector, is set to retire from her role as Vice Chair and Chief Experience Officer at Citizens Financial Group, effective March 3. Johnson has been a key member of the bank's executive committee, instrumental in building its digital, data, and marketing capabilities.

Johnson joined Citizens Financial Group in 2013, following a 15-year tenure as a partner at Bain & Co. Her first senior hire by Citizens CEO Bruce Van Saun, Johnson drove the company's environmental, social, and governance initiatives to support the communities served by the lender.

In her time at Citizens, Johnson oversaw customer experience, digital design, enterprise payments strategy, and the bank's sustainability & impact programs. Marketing, enterprise data, analytics, enterprise payments, and some support functions will now report to consumer banking as part of an initiative.

To fill the void left by Johnson's departure, Citizens Financial Group will create a senior executive role to oversee an expanded corporate strategy function. This new role will manage a broad portfolio that includes strategy, corporate development, customer experience, innovation, and sustainability.

Brendan Coughlin will oversee data, analytics, and marketing teams, while Don McCree will lead enterprise payments work. The enterprise experience organization will be decentralized to align with the bank's businesses and other functions.

Johnson has expressed excitement about pursuing a portfolio of activities in her career's next phase. Her next chapter will focus on board service, advising companies, charitable work, and other endeavors. However, details about her future charitable work and board service are yet to be disclosed.

It is worth noting that Johnson is also a member of the board at Invesco, but further information about her roles, advisory capacities, philanthropic efforts, or future plans outside of Citizens Financial Group could not be found in the current search results.

The bank is not hiring a successor for the chief experience officer role, suggesting that Johnson's influence and contributions will be deeply missed. As she embarks on her new journey, Johnson leaves behind a legacy of innovation, sustainability, and a customer-centric approach that has shaped Citizens Financial Group's growth and success.

  1. In her new phase of career, Beth Johnson plans to focus on board service, advising companies, charitable work, and other endeavors, which span various sectors including finance, business, and technology.
  2. To manage the broad portfolio left by Johnson's departure, Citizens Financial Group is creating a senior executive role overseeing strategy, corporate development, customer experience, innovation, and sustainability, incorporating aspects of business, finance, and technology.
