TikTok Lite: Europe and domestic unrest in various countries

In the world of social media, TikTok Lite has found itself under the microscope of European regulators. On April 24, 2024, the reward function in TikTok Lite was suspended in France due to concerns over mental health risks for young users and the need for thorough risk assessments before launch.

This suspension is part of a broader scrutiny focused on potentially addictive features and youth protection. The European Commission has been investigating the reward function of TikTok Lite since April 22, 2024, asking TikTok to provide explanations within 24 hours about the risks related to the deployment of its new application.

TikTok Lite, a lighter version of the Chinese social network TikTok, allows users to earn points for daily activities such as connecting each day or performing certain actions like liking content or following creators. These points can be exchanged for gifts on partner sites like Amazon, gift cards via PayPal, or TikTok coins.

In response to the regulatory concerns, TikTok introduced an updated version called TikTok Pro Positive. This version differs from the original TikTok Lite by emphasizing positive social impact and stronger content moderation. TikTok Pro Positive integrates features such as age-gated content, charity-driven challenges, real-time impact tracking, and direct donation options tied to video views and shares.

The updated TikTok Lite application was released on May 13, 2024, on the Google Play Store. It's worth noting that despite its description, the classic version of TikTok is actually lighter than TikTok Lite, and the standard version of TikTok is even lighter.

Both TikTok Lite and the standard version of TikTok require the creation of accounts and passwords. Other permissions include the launch of the application as soon as the smartphone starts up, the (de)installation of shortcuts, and the more precise geolocation of users. Each version of TikTok also allows users to manage their data and minimize the information shared on the platform.

ByteDance, the creator of TikTok Lite, was given a deadline to provide its defense arguments before the suspension of this option. The investigation into TikTok Lite continues, with the European Commission still investigating the reward function of TikTok Lite.

This news underscores the increasing focus on digital wellbeing and the responsibility of tech companies to ensure their platforms are safe and beneficial for all users, particularly young people. As the investigation progresses, we will keep you updated on any developments regarding TikTok Lite and its reward function.
