Third-ranking sales title in the U.S. for 2025: Oblivion Remastered, as reported by industry analyst

In under a week, Oblivion Remastered emerged as a major hit of the year 2025.

Third-ranking sales title in the U.S. for 2025: Oblivion Remastered, as reported by industry analyst

Looks like one of the hottest games of 2025 is a resurgence of a classic from 2006, with industry analyst Mat Piscatella announcing that Oblivion Remastered is currently the third-best-selling game of the year in the US.

Now, remember, I reckon Oblivion is third or fourth-best title in The Elder Scrolls series, and I ain't budging on that argument (unless maybe a new Elder Scrolls game knocks all the others out of the park). But there's no denying the hard numbers - Oblivion Remastered is apparently doing big business.

"After just a week in the market (w/e 4.26), Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered snags the third spot on the 2025 US sales charts, trailing only Monster Hunter: Wilds and Assassin's Creed Shadows," Piscatella, executive director and industry analyst at Circana, shared on Bluesky. "It takes the top spot of the week."

Piscatella made it clear that the numbers refer to copies sold and not just player counts, which also count folks playing through Game Pass subscriptions: "A subscription ain't a sale." Bethesda reported that Oblivion Remastered surpassed a whopping four million players last week.

Now, I got to admit, I wouldn't have imagined a remaster of a 20-year-old RPG to become one of the biggest gaming stories of 2025. But PC Gamer's Morgan Park made a relevant point: For a lot of players, Oblivion Remastered is essentially the "new" Elder Scrolls game we've been waiting for since Skyrim dropped in 2011. If you were nine years old then, you're 29 now, and that changes things, whether we're talking about updated graphics, user interface, or modern features - which, by the way, are excellent. Hell, even if you were 29 when Oblivion came out originally, there's a lot of water under the bridge, making a return to Cyrodiil mighty appealing.

In a separate post, Piscatella said Oblivion Remastered grabbed the top spot on Steam in terms of "total weekly active users" for the week ending April 26, and came in fourth on Xbox consoles, and 15 on PlayStation. The game seems to be doing exceptionally well on Steam: It remains high on the best-sellers chart, and concurrent player numbers are staying steady too - over 87,000 people are playing it right now, which ain't too shabby for 3 pm ET on a Monday afternoon.
