BYD Kicks Off Production of Seal 5 DM-i in Thailand, Expanding New Energy Vehicle Presence

In a significant move, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD began production of the Seal 5 DM-i (also known as the Chaser 05) at its factory in Rayong, Thailand on July 4, 2024. This marked the eighth millionth vehicle produced globally by BYD and the first right-hand drive model for the Thailand plant.

The factory, which started construction on March 10, 2023, is a testament to BYD's commitment to the local new energy vehicle (NEV) market. The Seal 5 DM-i is the fourth model produced at BYD's Thai factory and marks a significant step in the company's expansion in Southeast Asia.

Ke Yubin, general manager of BYD Thailand, stated that the production of the Seal 5 DM-i showcases BYD's recognition and confidence in Thailand's manufacturing capabilities. The company aims to create over 9,000 local jobs and drive the development of Thailand's NEV industry.

The Seal 5 DM-i is available in two variants in Thailand: Premium and Standard. The starting price for the Premium variant is 769,900 Thai baht, with a promotional price of 699,900 Thai baht. However, the price for the Standard variant has not yet been announced.

Interestingly, the Seal 5 DM-i is not new to the region. BYD has already launched the model in Thailand, with over 90,000 vehicles sold as of a statement released today. The model has also been a success in China, with BYD selling 10,303 units of the Chaser 05 (the same as the Seal 5 DM-i) in July 2024.

In addition to the Seal 5 DM-i, BYD has made other strides in the region. In 2022, the company entered the Thai market through vehicle imports. More recently, BYD brought the compact SUV Yuan Up to Malaysia.

BYD's entry into the Thai market and the production of the Seal 5 DM-i are significant milestones in the company's global expansion. The public launch of the Seal 5 DM-i in Thailand took place on August 8, 2025[1][2][3], marking a new chapter in BYD's journey in Southeast Asia.
