Tesla's Shanghai Megafactory Hits 1,000 Megapack Milestone

Tesla's Shanghai Megafactory, the company's first energy storage megafactory outside the U.S., has achieved a significant milestone by producing 1,000 units of the Megapack in less than half a year. This facility, spanning approximately 200,000 square meters, is expected to produce 10,000 Megapack units annually, with a total energy storage capacity of nearly 40 GWh per year.

The Shanghai Megafactory, which officially started production on February 11, 2025, nine months after construction began, is a key component of Tesla's rapid production ramp in China. The average production rate over the first six months was more than 188 units per month, indicating a steady increase in output.

This milestone comes as Tesla's other Megapack factories in Nevada are also ramping up production towards their respective 40 GWh peak capacities. Combined with these two plants, the total annual production capacity for Megapacks across these three facilities is approximately 83 GWh.

Each Tesla Megapack can store approximately 3,900 kWh of electricity, making the Shanghai Megafactory capable of powering 50,000 households in Shanghai for a year. The Shanghai Megapack unit set to be shipped to Europe marks another step forward in Tesla's global energy storage expansion.

Tesla's Shanghai Megafactory follows the same pattern as its Gigafactory, which went from a mud pit to operational factory in less than a year. The company is also building another Megafactory in Waller County, Texas, making it the third global Megapack plant.

This rapid production rate is a testament to Tesla's commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The Tesla Megapack is a large-scale commercial energy storage solution designed to stabilise power grids, store renewable energy, and prevent outages. The Shanghai Megafactory is not only a significant step for Tesla but also for the global transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
