Tesla Unveils the Model Y Long Range (Model YL) in China

Tesla has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) lineup in China with the introduction of the Model Y Long Range (Model YL). This new variant of the popular Model Y offers a larger six-seat configuration, enhanced cargo capacity, and increased range, making it an attractive option for families and those seeking more space.

Key Features and Specifications

The Model YL boasts a 6-seat configuration, with three rows of seats, unlike the standard Model Y which typically offers 5 or 7 seats. The Model YL is also larger in size, with a length of nearly five meters and a wheelbase of 3.04 meters, providing more room for passengers and cargo.

In terms of performance, the Model YL offers a CLTC-rated range of 751 km (466 miles), making it a suitable choice for long-distance travel. The Model YL achieves this range with an 82 kWh LG NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) battery pack, which is larger than the battery pack in the standard Model Y Long Range.

Pricing and Comparison

The estimated starting price for the Model YL in China is approximately $47,000 USD, which is about $3,600 more than the regular Model Y Long Range AWD in that market. For comparison, the regular Model Y Long Range features a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, combined power of 397 hp, a WLTP range of ~568 km (353 miles), an EPA range of approximately 320 miles (about 515 km), a top speed of 201 km/h (125 mph), and acceleration from 0-100 km/h in around 4.3 seconds.

Rollout and Future Plans

Production of the Model YL is set to begin at Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory this fall, and the vehicle is initially launching exclusively in China. However, Tesla may consider rolling out the Model YL to other markets if it proves popular. With the introduction of the Model YL, Tesla is looking to have a busy second half of 2022 ahead of what is expected to be a busy second half of 2025.

The Model YL is the latest addition to Tesla's growing EV lineup, following the launch of the new Model 3+ in China earlier this week. Tesla is undoubtedly aiming to further strengthen its position in the world's largest EV market with these new offerings.

Financial analysts in the automotive industry are intrigued by Tesla's latest venture, the Model Y Long Range (Model YL), given its increased range and expanded six-seat configuration. This new variant could potentially attract more customers in the transportation sector, particularly families, due to its optimized specifications for long-distance travel and enhanced cargo capacity. The introduction of Model YL also demonstrates Tesla's commitment to technology, evidenced by its use of a larger 82 kWh LG NMC battery pack.
