Tesla's Cybertruck RWD: $69,990, 7,500 lbs Towing, Unique Steer-by-Wire
Tesla's Cybertruck recently offered a rear-wheel-drive variant at $69,990, putting it in direct competition with the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T. This version, however, differed in performance and features from the all-wheel-drive model.
The Cybertruck's 48-volt electrical system powers its innovative features, reducing weight and cost. This system enables the use of thinner, lighter copper wiring and allows for an advanced steer-by-wire system. Developed in-house by Tesla, this system has no mechanical connection, offering variable-ratio steering. At low speeds, it achieves a 5:1 ratio, and at higher speeds, a 12:1 ratio.
The rear-wheel-drive Cybertruck could tow up to 7,500 lbs and carry 2,500 lbs in its bed. Its windshield, the largest of any passenger vehicle, required a unique, long windshield wiper integrated with the washer fluid nozzle to minimize spillage. Despite its size, the Cybertruck's rear-wheel-drive variant was slower, taking roughly two seconds longer to reach 60 mph compared to the all-wheel-drive version. Surprisingly, reviewers found it enjoyable to drive despite its lackluster performance.
The Cybertruck's rear-wheel-drive variant, priced at $69,990, offered competitive towing and payload capabilities. Its innovative 48-volt electrical system and steer-by-wire system set it apart, despite its slower acceleration. The unique windshield design and integrated wiper system added to its distinctive appeal.
