Tesla Secures Texas Autonomous Taxi License in Advance of Fresh Legislation
Tesla's Robotaxi Service Expands Across Major U.S. Cities
Tesla's autonomous Robotaxi service is set for a significant expansion, both in Austin, Texas, and other major U.S. cities.
In Austin, the service's geofenced area has expanded deeper into South Austin, and Tesla is planning to increase its coverage from the current 42 square miles to around 450 square miles, a tenfold increase involving urban, suburban, and rural zones around Austin. This expansion is part of Tesla's goal to provide Robotaxi service to approximately half of the U.S. population by the end of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals.
Beyond Austin, Tesla is advancing its Robotaxi network in the San Francisco Bay Area, where it currently operates within an 80-mile area stretching from north of San Francisco to San Jose, albeit with a safety driver present due to local regulations. Job postings and recruitment activities strongly indicate upcoming Robotaxi launches in several major U.S. cities, including New York (Brooklyn), Houston and Farmers Branch (near Dallas), Palo Alto, Tempe (Arizona), Henderson (Las Vegas), and multiple Florida locations such as Tampa, Clermont, and Miami.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced plans to allow Tesla owners to add their vehicles to the Robotaxi network starting sometime in 2026, significantly enlarging the fleet beyond Tesla-owned cars. However, Tesla is still working out technology challenges related to autonomous charging for the Robotaxi vehicles, which is critical for scaling the service.
The expansion of Tesla's Robotaxi service comes as the new law regulating autonomous rideshare operations in Texas takes effect on September 1. The license issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) allows Tesla to operate its autonomous Robotaxi service, with autonomous vehicles required to comply with all traffic laws and carry proper insurance. Tesla is listed alongside established players like Uber and Lyft.
A Tesla Robotaxi validation vehicle was spotted in Georgetown, Texas earlier this week, suggesting testing beyond the current service area. Tesla appears to be preparing for a broader Robotaxi debut across the state of Texas and in other key U.S. markets. The new law introduces new requirements for autonomous vehicles, including permitting, oversight, and equipment checks.
