Tesla Model S Set to Debut in India, Model Y Already Available

In an exciting development for electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts in India, Tesla has announced plans to launch the Model S between January and May 2026. The luxury EV is expected to be priced between ₹70 lakh and ₹1.5 crore.

The upcoming Model S is expected to offer a range of approximately 410 miles (about 660 km) on a single charge, a superfast acceleration, and a top speed of around 149 mph (approximately 240 km/h). To handle India’s uneven road conditions, the Model S will likely feature an upgraded suspension system. For a quieter cabin, improved noise cancellation will be included.

Inside, the Model S will boast premium seating, a tech-rich dashboard with a large infotainment screen, and ambient LED lighting with customizable animations. The vehicle is also expected to offer enhanced Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities, supported by advanced camera placements.

However, the high cost and limited service infrastructure in India are noted challenges for Tesla’s Model S entry. Despite these obstacles, the Model S is anticipated to appeal to luxury EV buyers with its premium features and advanced technologies.

Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y, a Model 3-based vehicle with a greater ride height, a glass roof, and a sportier, coupe-like profile, is already available in India. The Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) variant of the Model Y in India has two battery pack options: 60 kWh and 75 kWh. The single electric motor in the RWD version makes around 295 bhp.

The 60 kWh battery delivers a WLTP range of 500 km on a single charge, while the long-range version provides up to 622 km. The Model Y features an 8-inch rear screen, power-adjustable steering column, front seats, dual-zone auto climate control, 19-inch crossflow wheels, fixed glass roof, acoustic glass, and a power rear liftgate. The cabin sports a 15.4-inch front display screen, embodying Tesla's minimalist design.

The Model Y is very sparsely designed on the outside, with flush door handles, thin headlamps, and an aerodynamic profile that is more about function than form. The vehicle is offered in 7 exterior colours.

Tesla has already made strides in India with the inauguration of its first experience centre in Mumbai on July 15 and the first Supercharger EV charging station on August 4 in Mumbai's BKC. The new Tesla centre will be located at the Worldmark 3 shopping centre in Aerocity, Delhi.

As the EV market in India continues to grow, the arrival of the Tesla Model S and the continued availability of the Model Y are significant milestones, promising a future of sustainable and innovative transportation solutions.
