Struggles persist for Swedish gaming firms, leading to bankruptcies and staff reductions. The question is raised: what's causing this financial hardship, and what impact is it having on foreign workers in the gaming sector?

"Sweden's gaming sector faces a concerning trend of driving away talented individuals: A look at industry dynamics"

The Swedish gaming industry, one of the country's largest exports and a significant employer, is currently facing a tumultuous period. Amidst the ongoing pandemic, the sector has experienced a boom, with more people turning to video games for entertainment while stuck at home. However, this growth has been accompanied by challenges and trends that are reshaping the industry.

One of the most significant challenges is the tightening of regulatory enforcement, particularly in the gambling sector. Swedish authorities are intensifying their campaign against money laundering, with major operators facing record Anti-Money Laundering (AML) fines for compliance failings. This has led to increased scrutiny and a need for operators to strengthen their AML and customer due diligence frameworks.

Another major change is the shift away from land-based casinos. Following a legislative decision, all land-based casinos have either closed or are undergoing liquidation. This has resulted in layoffs and restructuring in the retail casino sector, with companies divesting associated real estate assets.

Despite these challenges, the online gambling market in Sweden has continued to grow, with a 5% year-on-year increase noted in Q2 2025. Digital revenue now comprises over 60% of total revenue for some operators like Svenska Spel. This growth is attracting increased investments in digital offerings, although regulatory compliance costs have also risen with more licensing fees and stricter AML demands.

However, this growth has not been without its casualties. King, a Swedish studio acquired by Microsoft, is laying off 200 workers, with 96 of them based in Stockholm. Microsoft, which owns Mojang, the company responsible for Minecraft, is also laying off workers. The current situation is causing a personal crisis for many workers going through a layoff, with roles in the gaming industry attracting specialists from other tech companies during the pandemic, but now there are not enough jobs to accommodate them.

The gaming industry's challenges are particularly impacting international workers. Many non-EU workers in the Swedish gaming industry have lost their jobs multiple times due to employer bankruptcies. Non-EU citizens in the industry lose their work permit unless they find a new job within three months after their notice period ends. Several non-EU workers in the same situation have already left the country.

From a business standpoint, investing in a game studio can be risky due to the long production process and high costs. Despite this, the interviewee, who has worked in the Swedish gaming industry for over a decade and has been affected by recent layoffs, believes the current situation is a "correction" more than a "crisis". Karl Magnus Troedsson, former CEO of Swedish games company DICE, described the current situation in the games industry as "a negative perfect storm".

Despite the difficulties, the gaming industry remains a vital part of Sweden's economy, and the shift towards online gaming and freelance roles may present new opportunities for those with the right skills and experience. For many, however, the fear of losing their jobs and the challenges of finding new ones are causing significant stress.

  1. Amidst the boom in the Swedish gaming industry, sports organizations have started to leverage technology, integrating eSports and virtual sports within their platforms to attract a wider audience and generate additional revenue.
  2. While the challenges in the gaming industry have resulted in job layoffs, particularly for international workers, innovative solutions such as the application of technology in sports might offer employment opportunities for those with the right skills and experience in the technology sector.
