Studio Knight Stokoe - Embracing Responsibility, One Project at a Time
Studio Knight Stokoe Discusses Regenerative Approach: Implementation and Benefits
In the ever-evolving landscape of architecture, Studio Knight Stokoe stands out as a pioneering force, championing a design philosophy that transcends traditional boundaries. We sat down with the team to delve into their approach, revealing their commitment to recognizing the environment and society as primary stakeholders, their journey as a B Corp, and their dedication to empathy, resilience, and regeneration.
Nestled in central Basingstoke is 'Plant,' previously Mountbatten House, and formerly Gateway House, a building and landscape that boasts a unique design and cascading rooftop gardens. Studio Knight Stokoe has breathed new life into this Grade II listed gem, transforming it into a testament to their forward-thinking ethos.
Embedding Commitment into Corporate Governance
When establishing our company, we were resolute in integrating the environment and society as core stakeholders. Becoming a Certified B Corp was a significant step in achieving this ambitious goal. With the guidance of legal experts, we meticulously amended our Articles of Association to reflect the B Lab UK framework. This legal arrangement legally recognized both the environment and society as primary stakeholders, signifying that profit is not our sole motivation.
To maintain transparency and accountability, we publish an annual Impact Report, a requirement for Certified B Corps. This report serves as a platform for open communication with our stakeholders while highlighting our progress and future plans. It benefits our internal stakeholders, such as staff, directors, and board members, and our wider audience, including customers, partners, and suppliers.
The B Corp Journey
We officially joined the B Corp community in April 2024, a milestone that symbolized our values and long-term commitment to social and environmental impact. Our journey can be traced back to the company's inception, fueled by a desire to build an organization that prioritized purpose over profit. The B Corp framework resonated with our vision of responsible business practices,ITS rigorous and challenging certification process matched our commitment to high standards. Its focus on transparency and accountability was a perfect fit for our mission.
The Three Pillars of Studio Knight Stokoe
Our design drivers - resilient, regenerative, and empathic - emerged from our desire to define a unique approach that focuses on what truly matters. These principles underpin how we work, setting us apart from conventional competitors.
Resilience is essential in the face of the urgent climate and biodiversity crises. Our projects aim to create landscapes and urban spaces equipped to adapt and thrive in an increasingly challenging environment.
Regeneration extends beyond mere maintenance, concentrating on the active repair and enrichment of the environments we design. This approach is woven into our design methodology, aiming to positively impact ecosystems.
Empathic design prioritizes human needs, addressing anticipated industry lapses in prioritizing empathy. This principle guides our designs, ensuring they resonate with their communities.
Circadian Rhythms and Seasonal Variations
Caring for employee well-being means thoughtfully incorporating circadian rhythms and seasonal variations into our studio environment. We prioritize exposure to natural daylight, utilize adaptable lighting systems, and support flexible work schedules during seasonal changes to promote comfort, productivity, and mental well-being.
