Get your hands on OpenAI's latest innovation, the Cloud-powered Codex!

OpenAI recently revealed Codex-an exciting new system of cloud-based AI agents designed to handle multiple programming tasks effortlessly without tying up your machine's resources. Following the release of the free, open-source Codex CLI version last month, this latest iteration is making waves in the tech world.

Unlike conventional code-completion or code-generation tools, Codex operates as a semi-autonomous agent with its own computing resources. With capabilities ranging from bug hunting to intricate refactoring, it's set to revolutionize software engineering by 2025.

"The future of software engineering is upon us, and we're taking a significant step towards it by introducing the Codex remote software agent," said OpenAI President Greg Brockman in an official presentation. "This system enables parallel processing of tasks in real time with minimal human guidance."

The demonstration exhibited multiple AI agents collaborating on a codebase simultaneously, effectively accelerating development like never before.

"What Codex achieves in minutes could've taken me countless hours to debug," noted Hansen during the presentation, as the AI swiftly took care of the task in the background. "We've found Codex to be as dependable as our colleagues, and in some cases, even more reliable," added another OpenAI researcher, Katie.

Setting itself apart from the CLI version, Codex runs on OpenAI's infrastructure, allowing developers to delegate tasks remotely and review the results later. Moreover, its agentic architecture enables the AI to review and enhance its outputs, making it capable of autonomous bug fixes.

The system is powered by a cutting-edge model known as Codex One, characterized as OpenAI's most advanced coding model yet.

"We've fine-tuned our o3 model to excel in real-world coding scenarios," Brockman explained.

While still in its research phase, Codex is initially accessible to ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Team subscribers, with plans to expand to Plus and Edu users in the near future. Initially, the service boasts "generous rate limits" and no additional charges, although prices may adjust as OpenAI collects usage data and feedback.

As it moves forward, OpenAI seeks to integrate Codex with issue trackers and CLI systems, potentially automating even more aspects of the development cycle. The company also continues to refine the Codex CLI, the open-source, local agent designed for use on developers' machines. In the future, OpenAI envisions a world where both local and remote versions seamlessly collaborate.

"What you're after is a remote co-worker with its own computer," explained Brockman. "You're coding away, and when you need a break, you can easily hand off tasks to the Codex agent, which takes over and finishes the work in the cloud."

Two months into its unveiling, the Codex remote agent has sparked quite the conversation:

"You made a software engineer and didn't include unlimited use in the $20 plan? Fuck you!" - DM User

"You made a software engineer and you're not charging $20k a month for it? What the fuck?" - DM User

-Sam Altman (@sama) May 16, 2025

In a separate post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the mixed reactions to the announcement:

"Two months into it, and the Codex announcement has been met with a fascinating spectrum of responses," wrote Altman. "Some users wonder why unlimited use wasn't included in the $20 plan, while others find it hard to believe the software isn't priced at $20k per month."
