Market Recap: Alphabet Earnings Beat Expectations, Wall Street Poised for Positive Open

The global stock market saw a mix of gains and losses on Thursday, with European shares trading broadly up and early signs suggesting that Wall Street might open positively.

In Asia, the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong rose by 0.51 percent to 25,667.18, while the dollar held at more than two-week low in the Asian trading session. The Topix index in Japan surged to 2,986.63 and settled 1.75 percent higher at 2,977.55, signifying strong gains for Japanese stocks. The Nikkei average ended up 1.59 percent at 41,826.34.

However, the S&P 500 futures were adding 6.75 points, indicating a positive start for the US market. Conversely, as of 8.10 am ET, the Dow futures were down 212.00 points, suggesting a potential negative start for the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Notably, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, reported strong earnings for the second quarter of 2025. The company reported revenues of $96.43 billion, a 14% increase year-over-year, and an EPS of $2.31, beating the analyst expectations of $2.17 by about 6.45%. Net income rose 19% to $28.2 billion, driven by growth in Google Search, YouTube ads, subscriptions, platforms, devices, and especially Google Cloud, which grew 32% to $13.6 billion. Alphabet also raised its capital expenditure outlook to $85 billion for 2025, emphasizing investments in AI infrastructure and cloud services.
