Sony Announces Rise in PlayStation 5 Pricing, Effective from August 21

In a blog post shared by PlayStation on Wednesday, the company announced that it will be increasing the price of the PlayStation 5 console in the United States. The new price will take effect on August 21, 2021, and will see a $50 increase for all PS5 models.

The standard PlayStation 5 console, previously priced at $499.99, will now cost $549.99. Similarly, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which was previously priced at $449.99, will now be sold for $499.99.

The price increase is attributed to the "challenging economic environment" and recent tariffs put in place by President Donald Trump's administration. However, PlayStation accessories' prices remain unchanged in the United States.

It's important to note that this price increase follows a similar move by Sony in various European markets in April 2025, and then in the United States starting August 21, 2025. Meanwhile, Microsoft's Xbox raised the cost of an X console to $599.99 in May, an increase of $100.

Nintendo set the price for its Switch 2 at $449.99 in April and priced some of its accessories higher due to the financial impact. No other price changes have been announced for additional markets.

As for the PlayStation 5 Pro, no new information about its price was provided in the blog post.

This price increase comes as the video game industry continues to grow, with more and more people turning to gaming as a form of entertainment during the pandemic. However, the ongoing global supply chain disruptions and the economic challenges have led to increased costs for manufacturers, resulting in price adjustments for some of the most popular gaming consoles.
