Germans are ditching their phones for more digital forms of communication at an astounding rate. In 2021, the Federal Network Agency reported a substantial drop in outgoing mobile phone calls from 163 billion minutes to 145 billion by 2024. This dip is even more pronounced in the fixed-line network, where calls plummeted from 104 billion minutes in 2020 to a mere 57 billion by 2024.
On the other hand, the use of messaging services like WhatsApp, Signal, Threema, and other internet services for audio calls has skyrocketed. From 121 billion minutes in 2022, this figure surged to an impressive 197 billion last year, overtaking the number of traditional mobile network calls. Video calls are following suit, climbing from 143 billion in 2022 to 184 billion in 2024.
It's not just about conversation anymore; it's about the exchange of chat messages, instant messages—be it texts, photos, voice messages, videos, or emojis. In 2023, a staggering 902 billion such instant messages zipped through the German ether, representing an 11 billion increase from the previous year.
