Skype, launched in 2003 and owned by Microsoft since 2011, is finally saying adios. On May 5, 2025, the beloved video calling and messaging platform will be no more, according to Microsoft's announcement. If you're still relying on Skype for work or personal purposes, it's time to hop aboard the Teams bandwagon.

Embrace the Move: From Skype to Teams

Microsoft is making the transition to Teams an easy one by setting up an automated data migration process. To kick things off:

  1. Fire up Skype and log in with your usual credentials. You'll see a pop-up window asking you to download Teams or open it if it's already installed.
  2. Start up Teams and log in using your Skype credentials. A "Get Started" button should appear. Click on it.
  3. Teams will present a list of your Skype profiles. Select the one you'd like to import.
  4. You might be asked to confirm your first and last names. Be sure to click "Confirm."
  5. With your account all set up, you're good to go!

P.S.: After January 2026, Microsoft will purge all Skype data stored on their servers, so don't put off the migration.

Skype's Time is Up

At one point, Skype was the undisputed champion of video calls and text chats—replacing the likes of MSN. But its dominance started to wane as platforms like Zoom, WhatsApp, and Teams (yes, even Microsoft's own) gained traction. The writing was on the wall when Microsoft launched Teams in 2017, kick-starting a gradual transition to a more comprehensive solution. The time has finally come for Skype to throw in the towel.

As Microsoft puts it in a blog post, "Hundreds of millions of people already use Teams as a collaborative platform, enabling them to stay connected and engaged at work, at school, and at home." Teams serves as an all-in-one solution, covering instant messaging, voice and video calls, and even collaborative document sharing.

Taking It Slow: A Staged Departure

During a transitional period of 60 days starting from the official closure, Skype will remain partially operational through Teams. Users of both platforms will still be able to exchange messages and communicate normally until Skype is officially laid to rest. However, traditional telephone call features, such as making calls to landlines or mobiles, will be permanently disabled on Skype. Skype subscriptions and credits already purchased can be transferred to Teams or utilized via the web portal.

For those who don't wish to immediately move to Teams, there's still an option to export your Skype data (contacts, conversation history, and calls) and save it on your computer. Microsoft also offers a tool for offline consultation of old Skype conversations.
