Germany Launches Nationwide Mobile Network Measurement Week

Residents of Rhineland-Palatinate are invited to participate in a nationwide initiative aimed at enhancing mobile coverage in their region and across the country. The week-long campaign, titled "Germany Checks Its Network," will begin on May 26 and run until June 1, 2025.

Supported by federal, state, and local governments, the project aims to collect a comprehensive, user-centric dataset on mobile coverage quality. Citizens will utilize the "Broadband measurement" app, developed by zafaco GmbH, to test their internet connection and upload data for analysis. This crowdsourced approach seeks to identify and fill gaps in existing dead zone maps, providing a more accurate view of mobile reception, particularly in rural areas.

Last year, Rhineland-Palatinate conducted a similar mobile network measurement campaign. Over 2,800 participants provided nearly 1.6 million valid measurement points. The results demonstrated that while 95 percent of measurement points showed a supply of 4G or 5G mobile networks, only 2G coverage was displayed at 3.2 percent of the points, and network availability was not detected at approximately 1.7 percent of the points.

Minister of Digitization Dörte Schall (SPD) of Rhineland-Palatinate emphasized the importance of these user-generated measurements, stating, "By harnessing this valuable data, we can better represent the user experience with mobile networks than what is officially reported by telecommunications companies."

The initiative forms part of a larger ongoing effort to monitor and improve mobile network quality across Germany. As data is collected, it will be anonymized and fed into the dead zone map of the Gigabit Land Registry, supporting infrastructure decisions and improvements in rural mobile coverage.
