Saxony Thrives: Economic Might and International Competitiveness

Saxony positions itself prominently as a significant economic center - Saxony as a Thriving Business Hub

In the whirlwind of 2024, Saxony's economy shone bright, recording an impressive 19 new business settlements and expansions. These investments amounted to about 128.5 million euros, generating or maintaining a whopping 949 jobs across the state. Despite formidable challenges, Saxony managed to hold its own against international competition, according to the Saxon Economic Development Corporation (WFS).

Investments Reach Every Corner

From the bustling cities of Chemnitz, Dresden, and Leipzig to outlying districts, investments poured in from various corners of the globe, with Germany, Austria, France, Britain, China, and the USA leading the charge.

Last year, WFS reported 16 settlements and expansions totaling approximately 10 billion euros. However, the staggering figure was inflated by the jaw-dropping joint venture by Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, and NXP Semiconductors to construct a trailblazing semiconductor factory in Dresden.

Thomas Horn, WFS CEO, expressed satisfaction, stating, "2024 was a good year for the location despite diverse challenges. We were able to attract new investors to Saxony and implement expansions with existing companies. These are positive signals, especially given the intensifying competition among locations, the difficult global environment, and the economic framework conditions."

Exports Soar to New Heights

Economics Minister Dirk Panter acknowledged the tumultuous global economic landscape, likening it to a seismic shift in the established order. He rebuffed these challenges, asserting that WFS is actively supporting Saxon companies in this environment. In 2024, exports in Saxony reached a record-breaking 51.1 billion euros, with about a third of the economic output derived from exports, reinforcing Saxony's standing as a land of exports.

Panter heralded Saxony as a global innovator, emphasizing the growing role of automated technologies and AI in the local economy. He envisioned these technologies enhancing and simplifying work lives, believing that AI and robotics would render many jobs more efficient and appealing. The Cluster Robotics Saxony is at the forefront of this mission, aiming to introduce these innovations into companies and fostering talent while developing novel business models.

Takeaways

In 2024, Saxony's economy thrived amid a turbulent global landscape, with investment activity tempered by cautious corporate spending, stable yet not exponential job creation, and ongoing participation in international markets. Saxony's strategic position within Germany's strong export economy, high innovation, and skilled labor force support its economic resilience, albeit with external challenges casting a lingering shadow over the near-term outlook.

  1. As a part of the strategic plan to enhance the local economy, Saxony's Community Policy could consider incorporating vocational training programs, specifically in the fields of technology, finance, and business, to cater to the increasing need for skilled workforce resulting from recent and potential investments in these sectors.
  2. The burgeoning technology industry in Saxony, with significant investments from TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, and NXP Semiconductors, could benefit from vocational training programs targeted at AI and robotics, not only to improve work efficiency but also to create a more engaging and attractive work environment for employees.
