A Shift in Retail: Sayonara, Saturn, Hello Media Markt!
Saturn is increasingly expanding as a popular arena for media businesses
Germany's shoppers are in for a change! Those expecting to find a Saturn electronics store might be surprised to see a shiny red Media Markt sign instead. This transition has taken place in various cities across North Rhine-Westphalia, such as Neuss, Hilden, Cologne, and Aachen.
Once upon a time, there were around 150 Saturn stores in Germany. But times have changed, and by the fall of 2024, only 87 remained, according to Ceconomy, the parent company of both chains. Since the beginning of this year, Media Markt has moved into 14 more Saturn locations, and more are on the way. Now, the number of Media Markt stores stands proudly over 300.
So, why the shift? Well, consumers are no longer distinguishing between the two brands, leading Ceconomy to invest in modernizing and improving their stores. As a spokesperson for the company put it, "Yes, we've reopened some Saturn stores as Media Markets and will continue to do so."
But don't worry, Saturn is not going extinct completely. The brand remains an essential part of Ceconomy's strategy, ensuring it won't disappear from Germany's retail landscape anytime soon.
The Future: Saturn and Media Markt Grow Closer
For customers who have been affected by the changes, the news is clear: Despite the change, the product ranges, offers, and advertising will remain strikingly similar. Ceconomy is even merging the bonus programs, meaning customers will be able to shop at both stores, collect points, and redeem them, regardless of which brand they choose. Even points from past purchases will be automatically merged.
Although Saturn is a relic of the past in many European countries, it still has a presence in Germany. In other countries like Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Poland, Saturn stores have either closed or been converted to Media Markt. As of the end of March, Ceconomy had over 1,000 stores in 11 countries.
The first Saturn store opened in Cologne in 1961, while the first Media Markt appeared in Munich in 1979. Saturn was taken over by the retail chain in 1990. The companies were majority-owned by Metro AG before the trading company Ceconomy, which oversees the MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group today, was founded in 2017 as a spin-off from Metro.
Innovation is on the horizon, with MediaMarktSaturn focusing on services like 90-minute express delivery through partnerships like Uber Direct, demonstrating the company's commitment to customer satisfaction. All of this is part of an effort to boost profitability and improve market share, as reflected by Ceconomy's recent financial performance.
