Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 Takes the Title of Thinnest Foldable Phone
At Samsung's latest Unpacked event, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was unveiled, and it has already made a significant impact in the world of foldable smartphones. According to tests conducted by Ice Universe, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thinner than Honor's Magic V5, setting a new benchmark for slim foldable phones.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 8.9mm when folded and 4.2mm when fully opened [1][2][3]. Honor, on the other hand, claims a folded thickness of 9.0mm for the Magic V5 (Ivory White model) [4]. This means the Z Fold7 is thinner by approximately 0.1 mm when folded.
This slimness is a remarkable achievement, as it represents a 48% reduction in thickness compared to the original Galaxy Fold [1]. The Z Fold7 also weighs just 215 grams, offering one of the thinnest and lightest foldable designs available.
However, the competition between the two devices is focused on small, iterative numbers. Honor disputes the accuracy of the tests, claiming the Magic V5 (Ivory White option) is 8.8mm thick [5]. User comments have been split regarding the methods used to measure the devices' thickness.
Ice Universe, who posted a comparison video between the two devices via 9to5Google, used a caliper to measure the devices. His test showed an 8.79mm measurement for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and an 8.95mm measurement for the Magic V5 [6].
Honor suggests that users should measure the thickness of the Magic V5 panel-to-panel, without the camera bump and screen protectors. The company is awaiting further tests to obtain a more accurate measurement.
