Samsung's new development could lead to more affordable QLED TVs, as they are reportedly working on a cost-effective quantum dot layer.

Cost-Cutting Innovation for Brighter, More Affordable QLED TVs

Goodbye to hefty price tags, QLED TVs are about to get a major affordability boost, thanks to Samsung's game-changing innovation. The Samsung-Hansol collaboration is set to slash 40% of the cost of quantum dot sheets, a crucial component of QLED displays, without compromising on quality.

The quantum dot sheet, responsible for enhancing color reproduction in QLED displays, currently is protected by expensive barrier films on either side, shielding it from oxygen and moisture. But these films are now a thing of the past, as Samsung and Hansol have devised a way to make them obsolete.

The new QLED design boasts three layers instead of the usual five, eliminating the need for barrier films without exposing the quantum dots to potential issues. While this breakthrough should lead to a significant drop in QLED panel costs, it's unclear when this technology will hit the market.

Questions about Prices and Improvements

The removal of pricey components could potentially result in cheaper QLED TVs. However, it's essential to note that the savings might simply be absorbed by rising costs or invested in other aspects of the TV, like backlight or speaker systems, keeping prices static.

It's Not a QD-OLED Savior

Unfortunately, this innovation won't directly benefit QD-OLED displays, as they follow a different design philosophy. While QLEDs place a quantum dot layer over an LCD light source, QD-OLED TVs, such as the Samsung S95F or Sony Bravia 8 II, use a blue OLED light source with two red and green conversion layers added via inkjet printing.

TCL and Samsung Take on OLED-Beating Technologies

New updates are in store for two OLED-beating technologies from TCL and Samsung. However, it's best to keep your expectations in check for these advancements in TV technology.

With this new cost-cutting innovation, the price of computing devices such as gaming laptops and smartphones equipped with QLED screens might see a decrease, following the anticipated affordability boost in QLED TVs. Moreover, the advancements in QLED technology could ignite competition in the market, prompting manufacturers to innovate gadgets and gadget accessories utilising the enhanced QLED screens.
