Samsung Provides Option for Galaxy S24-Series Users to disable Controversial Image Function
In an exciting turn of events for some Galaxy S24-series users, Samsung has simplified the process of disabling its top-notch exclusive display feature, "Super HDR."
As reported by Android Authority, this change is set to take effect with Samsung's upcoming One UI 7 release, scheduled for next year. With this update, users will have the power to disable the "Super HDR" feature system-wide by simply toggling a new switch within the Advanced Features settings. By turning off the Super HDR function, apps will cease to showcase Super HDR content, not just the Samsung Gallery app as was previously the case.
Rationale Behind Disabling Super HDR
At times, users might opt to turn off Super HDR to prevent their screens from becoming excessively bright while viewing specific images. This can occur when they stumble upon the occasional Super HDR photo while browsing a feed of standard images, causing the display to adjust to a higher brightness mode to display the photo's brightest parts accurately. Unfortunately, this is an inherent trait of HDR displays that can't be mitigated by adjusting the brightness control.
Super HDR is a relatively fresh feature that enables still photos to showcase the same enhanced brightness and contrast typically seen in HDR video content. When Super HDR is enabled, pictures can utilize the full brightness potential of the smartphone's display, significantly enhancing image quality by elevating contrast between the photo's brightest and darkest areas.
However, displaying Super HDR images frequently results in the entire display becoming much brighter than anticipated, which can be quite jarring, particularly when viewing content in a dimly lit room. Samsung has offered users the option to disable Super HDR within the Gallery app, but this control has yet to be extended to other apps such as Instagram or Google Photos until now.
A Valid Reason to Keep Super HDR Enabled
Although an overly bright screen can be uncomfortable, I urge Samsung users to inspect some HDR content before categorically dismissing the feature, as Super HDR can noticeably improve picture quality with correct usage. Instagram users, in particular, should scrutinize the work of Greg Benz, who provides numerous comparisons of the same photo with HDR turned on and off.
Turning HDR off using a one-time, set-it-and-forget-it option means surrendering a significant portion of the exceptional picture quality that your smartphone is capable of delivering. Consequently, I hope Samsung finds a way to improve the Super HDR experience for everyone rather than merely making it easier to disable it.
Samsung One UI 7 is currently in beta on the Galaxy S24 series, and users can install it via the Samsung Members app. The stable release is slated to launch alongside the Galaxy S25 series in early 2025.
