Safaricom Achieves Sustainability Milestones, Drives Economic Growth

Safaricom has achieved remarkable milestones in sustainability, technology, and economic impact. The company has been recognised for its climate change performance and supplier engagement, earning a place on the CDP A-list. Additionally, Safaricom's M-PESA has driven significant economic growth.

Safaricom's commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in its ISO 27701 certification for privacy information management and a 99 percent recycling rate. The company has planted over 830,000 trees and achieved a significant reduction in fraud cases, by 87 percent.

Safaricom's M-PESA, the financial backbone of the company, has driven its economic impact. The company contributed KSh 809 billion to Kenya's GDP in the 2025 financial year. The smartphone ownership on Safaricom's network climbed to 50 percent through its financing plan. Safaricom has also detected illicit financial flows linked to poaching through its anti-money-laundering algorithms.

In terms of diversity and inclusion, Safaricom has made strides with women now making up 49 percent of its staff and 45 percent of senior leadership. The company's 'True Value' stands at KSh 1.1 trillion, sixteen times greater than its financial profit.

Safaricom's achievements demonstrate its commitment to sustainable business practices and positive economic impact. The company's recognition on the CDP A-list, ISO 27701 certification, and significant contributions to Kenya's GDP highlight its success in various areas. Despite the lack of information about setting a new direction in corporate reporting, Safaricom's 14th sustainability report in 2025 is anticipated to provide further insights into its ongoing efforts.
