The state-backed messaging app, MAX, has gained significant attention recently with the registration of Vyacheslav Volodin, the Chairman of the State Duma, on the platform.

MAX, developed by Communication Platform LLC, a subsidiary of VK, is a multifunctional "superapp" designed to offer maximum opportunities for communication, business, and everyday tasks within Russia. The app, which is freely available for mobile devices and computers, aims to provide a secure, Russian-controlled alternative to foreign messengers like WhatsApp and Telegram amid efforts to establish internet sovereignty.

The key purposes of MAX include offering a comprehensive messaging platform, integrating with government services, facilitating money transfers, and providing access to VK services like video and music. The app boasts features such as high-quality calls even with weak signals, mandatory registration with valid Russian or Belarusian phone numbers, and plans for full launch in September 2025 with mandatory pre-installation on all mobile phones and tablets sold in Russia.

Vyacheslav Volodin, in his announcement, praised the quality of voice calls on the MAX app, stating that they work perfectly. He also shared his registration details, inviting others to subscribe to his channel on the platform.

The app's integration with government services raises concerns among critics, who fear it could be a tool for state surveillance. However, the Russian government promotes MAX as a national communications platform, adding convenience and security to users.

In addition to MAX, a new Russian messenger named "Lightning" is planned to be launched in September, further expanding the landscape of domestic internet communications.

MAX is designed as an all-in-one Russian messaging and services platform, combining communication, digital identity, state services, and payments, backed by the government for widespread use and greater control over domestic internet communications.
