Russian 'Doppelgänger' Disinfo Campaign Infiltrated, Over 800,000 Clicks Exposed
On Monday, the office revealed significant insights into the Doppelgänger campaign, following a security breach and technical analysis. The campaign, one of the most elaborate of Russian origin, targeted primarily at Germany, achieved over 800,000 clicks in eight months.
On July 11th, an attempt was made to log into the Doppelgänger control center, disregarding security measures. Despite the failure, the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution gained unauthorized access to the campaign's data on that day. The office found evidence of Russian origin, including IP addresses and working hours. Meanwhile, CORRECTIV and Qurium uncovered the campaign's technical infrastructure, including servers rented from Hetzner. The Doppelgänger campaign uses fake websites mimicking Western media outlets, attracting over 800,000 clicks, mainly from Germany, France, the USA, and Ukraine.
