Rumor suggests limitation of iPhone 15 data transfer speed to USB 2.0 standard.
Apple iPhone 15: USB-C Charging Port Arrives, but Data Transfer Speeds Controversy Persists
The highly anticipated launch of the Apple iPhone 15 is imminent, and the anticipation around this year's models is palpable. Rumors suggest that the Apple iPhones will finally transition to a Type-C charging port, a significant change from their long-standing Lightning port.
A recent report by researcher Majin Bu on Twitter has raised questions regarding the data transfer speeds on the new iPhone 15 models. According to this report, the new iPhones will feature a 1.6-meter long USB Type-C cable with 16 pins, supporting USB 2.0 20V3A. This configuration limits data transfer speeds to 480Mbps, a rate similar to the previous Lightning port. However, the researcher also claimed that these cables are now longer and thicker, implying increased durability.
While this report contradicts earlier rumors suggesting some iPhone 15 models may come with Thunderbolt support, there are plausible explanations. Apple might be withholding Thunderbolt capabilities for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, allowing for the faster data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps that Thunderbolt offers.
This strategy of differentiated speed tiers is reminiscent of Apple's approach with the iPad lineup. For instance, the new iPad Pro models come with Thunderbolt, while the iPad Air has a USB-C 3.1 standard, and the 10th generation iPad still relies on USB 2.0 despite the USB-C port.
Moreover, the iPhone 15 models are said to support up to 35W fast charging, according to earlier reports. The devices may also feature the Dynamic Island design on both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models.
Recent leaked images suggest that the new charging cable from Apple might have a longer, braided USB-C to USB-C design, and it could match the color of the iPhone. Apple has previously used similar Type-C cables for the iPad, but the company might take this a step further to match the cable with the iPhone's color for a more harmonious look.
The production of the iPhone 15 has reportedly commenced at Foxconn's Tamil Nadu factory.
It is essential to note that, as of now, there is no official confirmation from Apple regarding the support of Thunderbolt technology in any of the iPhone 15 models. However, the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max allows for faster data transfer speeds compared to the standard models.
