New Automotive Powerhouse HORSE Launches, Aiming for Leadership in Low-Emission Powertrains

On July 1, 2023, a new player entered the global automotive scene: HORSE. This joint company, formed by Geely and the Renault Group, is set to become a major player in the next generation of low-emission powertrains.

HORSE, headquartered in Madrid, Spain, will operate 22 sites worldwide, including Geely's and its subsidiary Aurobay's sites in China and Sweden, and Renault Group / HORSE's R&D centers and production facilities in Portugal, Romania, Spain, Türkiye, and South America. The new company will employ 19,000 people and boast a turnover of over €15 billion.

Patrice Haettele, CEO of HORSE, will lead the charge. The company's combined product portfolio with Geely and the Renault Group, along with its geographic footprint, will enable it to offer solutions for 80% of the global Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) market.

HORSE's propulsion systems will be ready to integrate all types of existing and future energies, including e-fuels, hydrogen, LPG, CNG, and Ethanol. The company will offer a complete range of technologies across all components, from engines and gearboxes to hybridisation systems and batteries.

At launch, HORSE will be a global supplier of propulsion system news. In the future, it could offer powertrain technologies to third-party car brands. Current industrial customers, including Renault, Dacia, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors Company, will continue to benefit from HORSE's offerings.

Aramco, the Saudi Arabian oil company, is evaluating a strategic investment in HORSE. This investment will support key research and development across synthetic fuels solutions and next-gen hydrogen technologies.

HORSE operates in 8 manufacturing sites, with a production capacity of 3.2 million units per year. Its plants will have the capacity to produce over 5 million transmission systems and powertrains a year.

The new company aims to become the leader in the next generation of low-emission internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. With its global presence, extensive R&D capabilities, and commitment to sustainability, HORSE is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive industry.
