Pulkovo Airport to Revolutionize Travel with Biometric ID System in 2026
Pulkovo Airport is set to revolutionise passenger experience with a biometric identification system, planned for launch in 2026. This pilot project will streamline travel from ticket purchase to boarding, using biometric data instead of passports.
The system, a first for the entire airport ecosystem, will offer passengers a choice: proceed to boarding with a passport or use biometric data. Currently, Pulkovo is testing barrier-free access to the pre-flight security area using biometric data, initiated in June 2025.
To ensure smooth implementation, careful coordination is required with all participants, including law enforcement agencies. The Russian Minister Nikitin is overseeing this process, with the police playing a crucial role in data security and law enforcement aspects. If successful, the biometric system will be scaled up to other airports.
In the future, domestic flight passengers may pass through checks without a passport, using biometric data and a QR code on their booking.
The biometric identification system at Pulkovo Airport, planned for 2026, promises a seamless travel experience. After the successful pilot, this innovative technology could be rolled out to other airports, transforming air travel nationwide.
