praise for China's prominent lead in solar energy production, having installed the most capacity worldwide in the first half of 2025, according to Shashi Tharoor.
China has made a significant leap in its renewable energy sector, surpassing coal-fired power installations and setting a global example. According to a report by Xinhua, China's total installed renewable power capacity stood at approximately 1.41 billion kilowatts at the end of 2024.
This impressive growth is the result of a sustained effort since 2013. Solar power capacity in China has increased more than 180 times, while wind power capacity has grown sixfold during the same period. This growth is part of Beijing's efforts to decarbonize the economy and contribute to worldwide green development.
In the first quarter of 2025, electricity generated from wind and photovoltaics in China reached 536.4 billion kilowatt-hours, accounting for 22.5% of China's total power use. This represents a 4.3 percentage point increase compared to the same period last year.
The first half of 2025 saw China install a record 256 GW of solar capacity, surpassing the combined solar capacity of the rest of the world. China also installed significantly more solar capacity compared to other countries in Europe, with Germany installing the most new wind energy capacity in Europe with 2,200 MW, but still trailing behind China's solar energy installations.
Shashi Tharoor, a Congress leader, expressed admiration for China's rapid progress in renewable energy. In a post on platform X, Tharoor highlighted the importance of China's leadership in the global clean energy race and urged large-scale adoption of solar power, proposing to cover barren lands in India with solar panels, learning from China's aggressive push into renewables.
By the end of March 2025, China's installed capacity of wind and photovoltaic power reached 1.482 billion kilowatts, surpassing thermal power capacity for the first time in history. The National Energy Administration of China predicted that wind and solar capacity will continue to grow rapidly and maintain the lead over thermal power.
China's renewable power capacity represented more than 40% of China's total electricity capacity at the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone in the country's transition towards a greener energy future. Tharoor's remarks on China's leadership in the renewable energy sector can be found on his X post at this link.
