Performances Captured on Video: Collaborative Performances with Continuum and Sapphire on Stage

In an exciting collaboration, film and TV editor Andy Young has created captivating on-stage assets for Motion City Soundtrack's 20th anniversary tour of their seminal record, "I Am The Movie".

Young's work on the tour footage is a testament to his expertise in using cutting-edge technology to enhance visual effects and colour grading. He employed Boris FX plugins Sapphire and Continuum to elevate the video editing process, resulting in visually striking footage.

Sapphire, with its powerful colour grading tools, was instrumental in creating cinematic colour grades. The plugin's S_ColorFuse feature offered customizable presets, adjustment layers, and fine-tuning options in Adobe Premiere Pro, ensuring a high-quality finish.

On the other hand, Continuum provided a broad suite of visual effects and video enhancement filters. BCC+ UpRes ML was used for upscaling video quality, while BCC+ DeNoise ML ensured clean and sharp images by reducing noise.

One of the standout features of Young's work was the use of Continuum's Beat Reactor setting, which quantized the visuals to the song's beat, adding a dynamic rhythm to the footage.

The "squigglevision" aesthetic, featured in Motion City Soundtrack's L.G. FUAD, was achieved through the use of BCC Turbulence for image warping, BCC Posterize Time for jitter and delay, and BCC Spray Paint Noise and S_Cartoon Paint effects for a unique, animated look.

Young also utilised BCC+ Film Stocks and S_FilmDamage to soften pixels and achieve various film looks, and BCC Prism effects to distort and make overlays more alive and dynamic. He frequently used BCC+ Color Gradient to pair with the film looks, adding a cohesive and visually appealing touch.

The opening of Motion City Soundtrack's show features old footage from the album recording and touring in 2003, which Young worked on. The footage, originally in DV tape format, was upscaled and enhanced using the aforementioned plugins.

Shane Nelson made the other half of the stage videos for Motion City Soundtrack, contributing to the overall visual spectacle of the tour. Kay Dargen allowed the use of live images, further enriching the on-stage experience.
