OpenAI's AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has become a significant player in the digital landscape, according to a study conducted between May 2024 and June 2025. The study, claimed to be the most comprehensive of its kind, analysed a random sample of 1.5 million conversations.

The study revealed that the most common non-work conversations focused on everyday tasks that created economic value. Interestingly, these tasks were often practical guidance, seeking information, or writing. Writing dominated these conversations, but most of the time, it was asked to modify user text, rather than creating new content from scratch.

When it comes to work-related tasks, ChatGPT is primarily used as an advisor or researcher, rather than for completing tasks from start to finish. Prompts that asked ChatGPT to complete a task, such as writing text, planning, or programming, made up about 40% of the messages. Writing tasks, however, accounted for the largest share of professional tasks, with only 4% of all queries related to computer programming.

The majority of work-related users of ChatGPT are educated professionals. Younger people primarily use ChatGPT for professional tasks such as work and education (about 69%), while older people tend to use it more for personal purposes. Younger users mostly employ it for text creation, whereas older users use it more for search and translation tasks. Additionally, around 15% of Swiss users use AI like ChatGPT for shopping advice and product recommendations.

The use of ChatGPT in a work scenario can improve judgment and productivity, especially in knowledge-intensive jobs. The gender gap in ChatGPT use has narrowed dramatically, with 52% of users having female-sounding names in 2025, up from 37% in 2024.

Another intriguing development is the potential future of OpenAI becoming a for-profit firm, as suggested by a Microsoft deal. However, this is an inference based on the context provided in the article, not a direct fact.

In conclusion, ChatGPT has become an integral part of both personal and professional lives, serving as a valuable advisor and researcher. Its use spans a wide range of tasks, from everyday practical guidance to professional writing and research. As technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how ChatGPT and similar AI tools will shape the future of work and communication.
