A Swarm of Ticks Descends Upon Siberia

Over 500 individuals in Altai Territory have experienced tick bites within the past week

The tick season has sprung earlier this year, setting its foot in April. The Altai region has faced an influx of tick bites, with a staggering increase from April 17 to 23 (360 cases) to April 24 to 30 (617 cases), according to the regional consumer protection agency.

Since the onset of the tick season, a total of 1449 people across the Altai region have fallen prey to these pesky parasites, with Barnaul accounting for 376 cases. Last year's season began a week later, with the first tick bite recorded on April 28 – a week later than this year.

As of April 30, 36 cases of the Siberian tick-borne fever have been confirmed, including 14 children under 14 years. No other tick-borne infections have been reported thus far. Upon analysis, the causative agent of Lyme disease was discovered in 16% of the affected ticks, and the tick-borne encephalitis virus was detected in 6.3% of cases. All those bitten by infected ticks were administered preventive treatment.

With ticks escalating their activities, the peak of their activity is expected in May. However, the threat of tick bites will persist throughout the warmer months. Keep in mind that, while there isn't a documented "tick invasion" in Biysk city specifically, ticks are a recurring issue during spring and summer across many parts of Siberia – including the Altai region.

To fight this seasonal scourge, local health authorities conduct regular monitoring of the tick population and alert the public about peak activity periods (April–July) via local media and health centers. Vaccination campaigns are also promoted ahead of the active season, and hospitals and clinics are equipped to provide post-tick-bite prophylaxis.

For the latest advisories, consult the Biysk City Administration or Altai Krai Public Health Office. In case of a bite, seek guidance from healthcare facilities like the Biysk Central District Hospital. Always inspect for ticks after outdoor activities and take prompt medical action. For the most current information, refer to the local 2024–2025 advisories, as the data provided reflects pre-2024 trends. 🕷️⚠️
