Ørsted Completes Offshore Substation for Sunrise Wind, US's First HVDC Project
Ørsted has completed a significant milestone for the Sunrise Wind project. The offshore substation, installed by Saipem's Saipem 7000 vessel, is now being commissioned. This marks a step forward for the 924 MW project, the first in the US to employ a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system.
The substation was put in place in the first half of September, with no information available about the company that installed the control center. Sunrise Wind, set to comprise 84 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW wind turbines, will connect to New York's electricity grid at the Holbrook substation in Brookhaven, Suffolk County.
Ørsted, now sole builder of the project, has launched a rights issue to raise capital. This follows Ørsted's acquisition of Eversource Energy's and Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind's stakes in the project.
The offshore substation's installation and commissioning paves the way for the Sunrise Wind project's completion. Once operational, it will supply clean energy to New Yorkers, marking a significant step in the state's renewable energy transition.
