OpenAI Teases New Devices to Redefine Human-Computer Interaction
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has been pursuing artificial general intelligence since 2022. Recently, it has explored entering the hardware market, hiring design legend Jony Ive and acquiring io for $6.5 billion. However, as of October 2025, no OpenAI devices have been publicly announced or released.
At the Welt AI Summit in Berlin, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at plans for a 'small family of devices' that could redefine human-computer interaction. These devices, led by Ive's design efforts, aim to focus on design and transform daily computer use, work, and play. Altman previously suggested that while AI doesn't necessarily require new hardware, users would welcome innovative devices.
OpenAI's journey hasn't been without challenges. The company has faced investor pressure to transition to a for-profit model and has struggled with insufficient compute resources and copyright infringement lawsuits. Altman has also noted that current computers are not optimized for AI-driven tasks. The planned devices, intended to execute complex commands, are expected to take time to develop and may not have an immediate release.
OpenAI's exploration into hardware, led by Jony Ive, promises innovative devices that could redefine human-computer interaction. Despite challenges and no immediate release expected, these devices could potentially transform how we use computers for daily tasks, work, and play.
