NVIDIA's RTX Remix Enhances Classic Games with Advanced Particle System

NVIDIA has recently released the RTX Remix update, a modding platform for RTX AI PCs designed to enhance the graphics of classic PC games with path tracing. This update introduces an advanced particle system, giving modders the ability to create stunning visual effects for a wide range of beloved games.

RTX Remix mods span a catalog of games like Half-Life 2, Need for Speed Underground, Portal 2, Deus Ex, and more, boasting over 2 million downloads. These mods, which require a GeForce RTX GPU, are compatible with any hardware that can run Vulkan ray-traced games.

With RTX Remix, modders can add particles into their scene instantly while playing. The particles cast accurate shadows and are reflected in the world, a rarity in games. The Antlion Guard from Half-Life 2 RTX, for example, is designated as a particle emitter, with over 100,000 shadowed particles performantly rendered.

The advanced particle system enables modders to enhance traditional fire and smoke effects, as well as more fantastical effects. For more control, modders are recommended to build particles in the RTX Remix Toolkit.

The RTX Remix modding community has grown to 237 active projects, with over 100 RTX Remix mods released. To find these mods, visit ModDB or the RTX Remix Showcase Discord server. To make RTX mods, download NVIDIA RTX Remix from the NVIDIA app and use the Half-Life 2 RTX demo or Portal with RTX from Steam as examples.

The RTX Remix Mod Contest awarded cash prizes to developers of Painkiller RTX Remix, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines - RTX Remaster, I-Ninja Remixed, and Call of Duty 2 RTX Remix of Carentan. The four winner developers are Merry Pencil Studios for "Painkiller RTX Remix," tadpole3159 for "Call of Duty 2 Remixed," and two other modders/teams recognized for "Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines RTX" and "Eye Ninja," with Merry Pencil Studios and tadpole3159 specifically named among top winners.

Modders can create brand new particles in Remix that match the look of those found in modern titles. In the RTX Remix Rendering tab, users can adjust the size, number, color, and other properties of particles. The Games Setup > Categorize Textures tab allows selection of any game element. The RTX Remix Developer Menu can be opened in-game to access particle emitters.

With RTX Remix, the world of classic PC games is being transformed, one particle at a time.
